The problem was that the two schools and package plants needed to be set up with the correct systems for wastewater management. Engineering Firms, including PMC-STS Inc, were contacted to help look at the options, find a solution, and implement it.

Wastewater Specifics

Wastewater is water from domestic, industrial, commercial, or agricultural activities, surface runoff or stormwater, and sewer inflow or infiltration. The characteristics of wastewater vary depending on the source. Types of wastewater include domestic wastewater from households, municipal wastewater from communities (sewage), and industrial wastewater. It can contain physical, chemical, and biological pollutants.

Why Was This Situation Complicated?

Traditional systems use sand filters, which was what the school used. In many cases, they are one of the most rewarding systems; however, water flow only goes in two directions, up and down. When school is not in session, there is very little wastewater in the system, so a sequencing batch reactor was the solution. The sequencing batch reactor was chosen because of the highly variable flows it offers.

What is a Sequencing Batch Reactor?

Sequencing batch reactors are a type of activated sludge process for wastewater treatment. SBR reactors treat sewage or output from anaerobic digesters or mechanical biological treatment facilities.

Oxygen is bubbled through the mixture of wastewater and activated sludge to reduce the organic matter.

The Basic Working of a Sequencing Batch Reactor?

The installation consists of one or more tanks operated as plug flow or thoroughly mixed reactors. The tanks have a flow-through system with wastewater and treated water flowing out. In multiple tank situations, one tank is in decant mode, and the other is aerating and filling. Within treatment, there are five stages: fill, react, settle, decant, and idle. An SBR can be adjusted, and the design for the schools was that half of it could be shut down when needed.

The Collections System

While the sequencing batch reactor is the solution, it is part of a more extensive system with many compartments, tanks, chambers, pumps, and more.

With all the different moving parts, a team was brought in from various industry experts.

Why PMC-STS, Inc. ?

PMC-STS, Inc. was called in as they are a solution-oriented company and a leader in technology solutions. The engineering and application specialists have been developing level measurements for groundwater, surface water, sewage, remediation, and oceanography for over three decades. They can also make items to order, such as range and cable length, and other options based on a client’s needs.

For local questions or inquiries, don’t hesitate to get in touch with SRP control systems ltd, the exclusive Canadian representative for PMC-STS, Inc.

Large tanks and sequence batch reactors are chosen to handle wastewater whether or not the class is in session in Ohio.
