Yet, measuring and receiving the precision one might expect is relatively tricky. For obtaining accurate temperature measures, it is essential to have your temperature sensors calibrated regularly to maintain accurate data. There are several ways that temperature sensors can be calibrated based on equipment availability and suitability for your needs.

Techniques and Methods:

There are two techniques to calibrate a temperature sensor: part of a system or the sensors individually. If the sensors are calibrated separately, they obtain a calibration report with corrections later entered into the electronics connected to the temperature sensor for an accurate temperature reading. When calibration occurs as part of a system, the sensor is heated or cooled to a known temperature, and corrections are made directly to the electronics. Within the two techniques, there are a few standard methods to calibrate.

Calibrating Electronics with a Simulator:

A temperature simulator takes an input temperature to calibrate the electronics of a temperature measurement and control system. It outputs the corresponding voltage or resistance based on standard national tables. The electronic settings are instant and require no stabilization time rendering this type of calibration to be fast.

Calibrating with Dry Wells

Many customers utilize a dry well as a heat source and a thermometer reference. In other words, they test their thermometer or sensor in the well and compare the reading to the temperature displayed on the dry-well monitor. The display will showcase the temperature set by the client and the actual temperature measured. In temperature calibration, dry wells are the most helpful tool. Now, units are made to fit in your hand and can even be used as laboratory standards.

Calibration Considerations:

Multiple considerations must be considered when calibrating a temperature sensor. First, all information and steps need to be documented in a calibration certificate. The reference standard also must have accurate traceability to National Standards.

Like any calibration, you must be aware of the total uncertainty of the process. Specifically, the process can be the most significantly unreliable in the total uncertainty regarding temperature calibration.

Professional calibration of temperature sensors is typically done with temperature baths or dry wells, enduring the most accurate data and calibration.

Working with an ISO 17025 Accredited Lab

SRP control systems have been helping industries with their calibration needs for the last 40 years. Call us if you need clarification on how to calibrate your temperature sensors. They can help your lab more efficiently as a service and product provider.

According to Capgo Measurements, Temperature measurement is the most commonly measured parameter.
